Benhur

Benhur is a white American Akita mix, who was abandoned by his family, they did not want him anymore, from what we remember, it was because he was too big for the owner, but we don't have more details. You cannot see it through his thick fur and big body, but Benhur has a very broken heart inside from his abandonment. When he arrived with the Sanidad van, he was looking around in such confusion, and cried so sadly in his kennel, it has been so hard for us to see and hear him suffering so hard emotionally. Now he is starting to get used to the situation a bit more, and very much enjoys going for walks and to the park with volunteers. With his stunning white coat and big, cuddly bear look, Benhur the Akita really reminds us of a polar bear! And just like a bear, he has his own charming quirks, one of them is sticking out his tongue in the most adorable way, making everyone around him smile. At first, he can be a little excited to head out, but once he’s on the leash for a minute, he walks beautifully no pulling, just happy steps. He adores his walks and, when given the chance, also enjoys exploring freely. Sniffing bushes, taking in all the fresh air, and investigating every corner is his favorite pastime. Because he loves to explore, cuddles sometimes have to wait a bit – but don’t worry, as soon as you’re out of sight, Benhur will search for you right away to make sure you’re okay. Then he happily returns for a petting session, before trotting off again on his little adventures. Behind his polar bear looks hides a big heart: curious, loyal, playful, and always ready to brighten your day with his funny tongue-out expression. Benhur is looking for a loving home where he can be both the brave explorer and the teddy bear he was meant to be. Benhur is coming from a home environment, so he is familiar with home life, keeping clean in his surroundings, being around people. When they first brought him to us, they told us they believe he is reactive to other dogs, but that is not really the case. Like almost always, big males do not usually like other big dominant males very much, but other than that, he is calm and balanced around other dogs. From what we have observed, Benhur is friendly with other dogs. From a distance he loves to watch them, and when meeting by the fence, he comes close and even offers sweet kisses. Afterwards, he’ll often lie down by the fence, simply enjoying the company of his new furry friend and showing his gentle side. We could well imagine Benhur being happy to live together with a nice female dog, and we will be testing it out in the near future. His shoulder height is approximately 65-68cm, with a lot of his size actually being his fluffy fur.
